The New World- Boyhood- This is one of the best films ever made. I realize it's odd to pick something that is so recent, but no film in my recent memory makes me so happy, and is so interesting. Schindler's List- Until I saw The New World this is what I considered the best film ever made. The acting is superb, and there are moments of wild emotion. Steven Spielberg's finest film. Before Midnight- This is the end to the finest love story ever put to film. That's all I can say. Some of the greatest dialogue written here. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy : These are the greatest, and most fun fantasy films of all time. Also great about them they really are some very deep characters in this. Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet- Hamlet is no easy show to get through but Branagh's has so much energy, and production to it that the time went by in snap. The production design in this film is incredible. Goodfellas- Ever since I was a small kid I always wanted to be Martin Scorsese. Being Martin Scorsese would be better than being the President of the United States. Enough said. Saving Private Ryan- What a well constructed film. The Normandy scene is fantastic, but even better is the ending battle the emotional resonance is fantastic. 2001: A Space Odyssey- This is the first film that I encountered surreal images in. It is also the first film that I didn't get at first, but could appreciate for it's imagery. Then one day I watched it again. It was in this time when I "got it",and the whole thing blew my mind. Eyes Wide Shut- I appreciated this film more than I thought because it felt like a very well acted dream. A film full of our desires, and also the dangers of them. It's intense, and almost mystifying, and a fitting end for Stanley Kubrick's career. The Shawshank Redemption- This is one of those films I could watch every month, and enjoy every time. This is a story with fantastic characters, and even better moments all shot with mastery by Roger Deakins. The Big Lebowski- For all the things that can be said about The Big Lebowski the thing that really sticks out to me is the fact that the film is very funny. Sure there's more to delve into with this film, but my real opinion on it is based on the fact that the film is hysterical. My opinion is that this is the best Coen Brothers film. O' Brother Where Art Thou- This is another Coen Brothers film. This one rather than being funny ( even though it is) excels because from the first scene it's infused with a joy to it. The soundtrack is just incredible as well. Cloud Atlas- The movie that got me into movies Cloud Atlas really has it all. Romance, thrilling action, and everything in between. This is a monumental achievement that has an emotional punch unlike any other film. Moonrise Kingdom- The best thing about Moonrise Kingdom is just how genuine it is. It's quirky and unrealistic, but it stays that way resulting in an extremely fun experience. Locke- There's not much to say about Locke that wouldn't ruin it. I will say that it's a man in a car for an hour and 24 minutes, and it's more engaging then most film I have ever seen. True Grit (2010)- Another masterpiece from the Coen's this film doesn't change the original story, but remains powerful because of fantastic performances. Kinsey- I appreciate honesty. This film is honest, and doesn't bother lying to you. It's graphic yes concerning it's material but it handles it's material maturely. Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind- A quirky love story, mind-bending imagery, and an end realization that with baffle you Eternal Sunshine is one of the most reward films I've seen. Inside Lleywn Davis- This isn't a happy film, but it's got incredible performances, and is interesting throughout the entire thing. It's also a wonderful dark comedy. Black Swan- I love intense movies that thrill you while also ripping your head apart. This is the best film that does this. The tension keeps winding up, driving you out of it until in the final moments everything converges, and you realize the true extent of the main characters troubles. Eastern Promises- You know what I hate? Crime stories that are simple, but are so convoluted that you can't figure them out. Eastern Promises is simple and shocking, but not overly complex. It's fantastic work from Steven Knight, and David Cronenberg. Inherent Vice- A hilarious, and touching tale of drugs and mystery Inherent Vice is just as good as anything else Paul Thomas Anderson has made. A Most Violent Year- A most excellent film this is the greatest small scale gangster film of all time. Expertly written by J.C. Chandor this is an incredible achievement. Pans Labyrinth- This is the best fantasy film ever made. A heartbreaking tale of a little girl dealing with the world around her Pans Labyrinth is a masterpiece. Being John Malkovich- Just about the most creative movie about the manifestation of people's emotions Being John Malkovich is a weird, and emotional film. Almost Famous- Cameron Crowe's best movie by far Almost Famous takes a young persons longing to have been alive in the 70's and makes it come alive in a great rock and roll movie. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly- Yes this 2 hour and 41 minute 1967 spaghetti western is in fact as awesome as it's legacy suggests. Titanic- The greatness of Titanic is that it uses melodrama to enhance the emotion of everything else on screen. It's a beautifully shot, and acted epic. Into the Wild- This is an inspiring, and heartfelt movie. A movie that is poetic, and beautiful. What I wished last years Wild was. Mulholland Drive- The scariest film of all time....period. The Last Temptation of Christ
