12 Years a Slave: Directed by Steve McQueen, Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fasbender.7/23/2014 This was actually the first real review I had ever written. It's not the greatest, but I think it holds up. In the modern era we find ourselves ignoring at times the hardships of the past. Especially in North America we prefer not to talk about slavery. And I get why. As this film proves it is something we would not want to highlight all the time. But it did happen and time and time again something reminds us. This is that reminder. This 134 minute powerhouse is engrossing, well made, and terrifying. Now what makes it a powerhouse is mainly the actors. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup a free black man in the North that is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Here he has two owners. The first is played by Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch. This is a nicer owner. Cumberbatch does well with the little time he has in the film and I liked him very much. A turn of events though lands Solomon in the hands of Michael Fassbender a ruthless plantation owner. This movie finds itself becoming very powerful as we see how Solomon survives. Ejiofor does an amazing job in his role and has been nominated for an Oscar. So has Fassbender. They both find themselves embodying the characters so well that the blows that the film throws at you become extremely powerful. This is the first film in a while I almost cried at mainly because of the baffling scenes that depicted the doings of the kidnappers and the bad plantation owner. I could not find myself recommending this to the faint of heart though. This is because of some of the more violent scenes. The movie I would say depicts not so much violence as it does cruelty. And at times this is extremely disturbing. But the film is also exciting. And all of the attempts to escape get out all have tension to them. Finally he does get out and at that moment. The events that happen then inspires in so many ways. After the hardships he finally rises out and it is uplifting. This is the Best Movie of 2013 and I hope it wins the Best Picture award it is nominated for. A 100% from me. 10 out of 10. This movie later won three Oscars. Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Picture. I also later changed my mind. This is the second best film of 2013 Blue is the Warmest Colour is the best.
