Insanity is tricky. It is the one thing no one can escape. It is the one thing that controls us. Nina (Natalie Portman) falls very far into insanity in this film and it’s a hell of a ride. Black Swan is not only bad for the faint of heart because of graphic content, but also for the psychological kickback that it has. It is literally so intense that I am still buzzing minutes after it’s end. The story is a warped one of the Swan Lake ballet. The dance is about a girl who is turned into a swan who needs true love to break the spell. She is the White swan . When a prince comes and falls in love with the white swan her sister the Black Swan steals him. Distressed the White Swan kills herself. The story of Black Swan follows this story through the eyes of the characters. Nina is a ballerina who has been cast for Swan Lake. The role slowly drives her insane from both the pressure and the chance of losing it. That is of course in part to the criticisms of her trainer, and the threat of losing the part to another dancer (Mila Kunis).Except this is not actually given to you in all the most clear way. The best part is that’s an advantage. The sheer amount of fragmentation actually helps you figure out when Nina is being effected the most and you are too.The film switches from a twisted dream to a stressful reality. It’s your choice to decide which one is which. This leads you to have to work out things. Every moment is more intensified and honestly grotesque as the film goes on. Yet does the insanity of the film, the sheer disturbing feeling of the whole event (trust me this is probably the most disturbing film I’ve seen) ruin the film. No. The more and more the film builds the more suspense it has. It grabs you and shakes you. It doesn’t let go till the film ends. But if none of this is believable the film wouldn’t work. Well the cast is game for the entire thing that it all does come off believable. Natalie Portman who won an Oscar for the role really is good and I’m impressed with the dancing she does. I realize that there was a dance double at moments, but even then I wouldn’t care. Mila Kunis (who I don’t think has gotten as good of a role since is also great playing a character that is actually a nice person, but to Nina has a wicked and terrible personality. Those are the main players, but the supporting cast is also excellent. I did mention the dance and I really don’t know how they were able to do this. This film took a very long time to prepare and it is superb. Just beautiful. Black Swan is one of the best psychological thrillers I have seen. it build and build until it finally ends leaving you disturbed, but also satisfied and excited. Creepy, intense and well acted Black Swan gets a 9 out of 10
