From the trailer Inside Llewyn Davis looks like a genuinely earnest and uplifting musical-drama. This is VERY wrong. It is not. Inside Llewyn Davis is a film about a man that's down on his luck. He makes shit money, has accidentally gotten his friends wife pregnant, and so on and so forth. The problem with going in such a direction is the fact that this could come off quite depressing, but it doesn't. The Cohen's have always done well with their scripts, and this is actually special in it's own way. The reality is that much of the dialog is funny and you laugh at it, but it's really the situation that has you laughing. All comedy comes from one character's misery and that is true here. It's very subtle, but this is a quite funny film in that way. I really came to this after I had finished the film, but that's how it is. The film won't appeal to certain people who will find it depressing, but if you can just realize the point of the film it really is good. Inside Llewyn Davis as I mentioned before is really just about folk singer Llewyn Davis running into a few situations over about a week that could bring him down. They do really. That's it. Oh sure stuff actually happens but that's the idea. The performances are all good and so is the dialog which really helps the film pull off the comedy out of misery angle. Oscar Issac is especially good, and the others are really good, but John Goodman in a small supporting role kind of stands out. Plus special mention to the cats who actually play a big part and you kind of care about them by the end. All of the music in the film is incredible. It all has a free type sound almost saying that the music kind of helps the people escape from they're unhappy lives. The best are definitely "One Hundred Miles" and the hilarious "Please Mister Kennedy." That's really all there is. For as much as it takes to get the whole thing Inside Llewyn Davis is not so much in the sum of it's parts. But what it does with the stuff that is good really does well. It's good, actually great and is definitely on my top ten of last year. Inside Llewyn Davis gets a 10 out of 10.
